The Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) is a digital synthesizer, sampler, and digital audio workstation introduced in 1979 by Fairlight. Being one of the earliest music workstations, embedded with a sampler, the Fairlight CMI was capable of samples at 8 bit @ 16 kHz to 16 bit @ 100 kHz.
The second version of the Fairlight CMI, Series II, was released at a price of £30,000 in 1982.

In 1980, the album, "Never for Ever", by Kate Bush was the first commercially released studio album to incorporate the Fairlight.
Jean Michel Jarre used many of the Fairlight sounds in his compositions.
